Why are we as a culture so fixated on “getting ahead” when it comes to our working lives?
To be candid, we live in a “grass is greener” mental dilemma. Is there something wrong with this?
Of course we all want to earn more money and this writer believes strongly that as Americans we should be able to honestly earn as much money as we can.
So most of us mind masturbate about leaving what we have for what we perceive as being better elsewhere. We chase that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
In addition, we often think that we are in a rut working our asses off at a “dead end” job.
However, a “dead end” job means different things to different people. This writer personally knows of a parking attendant that thinks he has hit the career jackpot!
Consider why. This is a man who fled his native country of Mexico to become an American citizen. He is now working as a parking attendant in Beverly Hills, to support his wife and 2 young children. He feels blessed even though, he works underground parking cars, sometimes taking abuse by busy executives and has little if any benefits or vacation time.
But hey, with great pride he tells people and his extended family back home that he is not just working in America but in Beverly Hills!
This parking attendant never feels like this is a “dead end” job.
He believes that what he is doing is a vital service for the executives that run their businesses and keep the economy humming.
Think about your job. Maybe what you are doing is of extreme significance to others and of course necessary to pay the bills, though you may think of it as a “dead end’ job. Is it though?
There is much dignity in your work if you consider the larger picture in providing service to others.
Ambition is encouraged in America and this writer implores everyone to follow their dreams. However for most of us, though we are not working at our dream jobs, we are providing service to others. Is that not of extreme significance?
Of course it is.
You might want to think again if you consider yourself to be working in a “dead end” job.
